How drawn are you to the ocean? Does the sound of the waves bring you to a place of peace and calm? When you take a dip in the water, do you feel energized and healed? If you have said yes to these questions, you may be a sea witch.

What is a Sea Witch?

A sea witch is a practicing witch that connects with the ocean and all of its inhabitants, as well as its elements and the phases of the moon. Now, some of you may be wondering what elements is there for a sea witch besides water? Believe it or not, all of the elements have an association with the ocean.

Water

There is no surprise how water is connected to the sea witch. Water is the primary source and tool used is sea witchcraft. An element of emotion, some days the waves may be calm and at peace, other days it may be rough and choppy. Like the waves of the sea, we too ebb and flow.

Earth

An energy used to center and ground oneself. Burying one’s feet in the sand (even while in the water), concentrating on that earth element to give you the ability to ground your body as the emotion of the waves and you flow in and out with each other.

Air

Nothing is better than feeling that cool breeze and feeling that sea mist caress your face. Taking in the ocean air, cleansing and purifying the soul. Clearing out negative emotions and thoughts and bringing in positive thoughts and emotions.

Fire

When you think of fire, the ocean is the last place you would think to find it. But when the sun is out shining bright, that fire is reflecting off of the water’s surface. The hot beach sand is warmed by the sun’s fiery glow. Fire is an energy of force. Something that the ocean has within itself. Taking in that energy to give strength and power.

A sea witch NOT living by the ocean

I’m sure most sea witches live by the ocean, or within a couple hours. But what if you don’t? It’s ok, if you do not live by the ocean but you are drawn to the sea witch life, all hope is not lost. Sure, things may be a little more challenging, but it is not impossible. There are still ways you can incorporate the ocean into your practices.

Believe it or not, you can order saltwater. Check around and see what you can find from an outside source to obtain saltwater for your practices.

An easier way to incorporate the sea in your practices is by using beach themed items (listed below). Using items that came from the source still hold the power of the sea. A power you can still tap into.

Another way, but not the cheapest way is to take a trip to the ocean. A sea witch will always have that draw to the ocean. Sometimes a well-planned trip is just what you need. Don’t forget to leave some room in your luggage to bring back all of those beach treasures you find.

Signs you may be a Sea Witch

There are many ways to determine is sea witchcraft is for you. Take a look at this list and see if any or all of these sign’s vibe with you.

  1. You have a strong and deep connection with the ocean
  2. The ocean is a way to heal and recharge you
  3. Are you a water sign? (not necessary to be a sea witch)
  4. Interested in oceanic folklore
  5. A love for sea creatures
  6. Enjoys beachcombing
  7. Finds peace and calm in the ocean
  8. Emotional
  9. A pull to working with water deities
  10. Enjoy the nautical aesthetic

Sea Witch Tools

Sea witch tools are easy to come by if you live near the ocean. Beachcombing is the best way to find what you need to do any sea witchcraft. If you are unsure what beachcombing is, it is how it sounds. Combing the beach and finding treasures. There is so much that can be found on the beaches that a sea witch can use in their everyday practice. Connect with these treasures and allow the energies within them to enhance your spell work.

  • Ocean water
  • Sand
  • Seashells
  • Seaglass
  • Driftwood
  • Starfish
  • Sand dollars
  • Waterlife remains (bones, eyes, teeth, scales, etc.)
  • Seaweed/ water grasses
  • Candles (blue of all shades, not found on the beach, but useful in sea witch practices)
  • Rocks
  • Crystals (aquamarine, pearl, lapis lazuli, not all found on the beach, but useful in sea witch practices)
  • Coral
  • Feathers
  • Oyster pearls
  • Washed up items (glass bottles, rope, netting, etc.)

When beachcombing, be sure to do so in an ethical way. Do not take more than you need, and do not go out of your way to harming any wildlife. If that wildlife has already expired and washed up, that’s one thing. But do not go out of your way to take life away for your own benefit (i.e. breaking off coral). Also, be mindful of your local laws. Some things are illegal to harvest and should remain on the beach.

Sea Witch Practices

There are many ways to practice as a sea witch. Some practices can be done without having to go to the ocean, but just by using materials gathered. A sea witch will have access to the ocean within their own home by the materials gathered from the source itself.

  1. Use shells in decor and practices

  14. Combine sea witch and your inner kitchen witch to make an amazing ocean themed meal
  15. Meditation (in the water, on the beach, at home holding a sea object, etc.)
  16. Leave an offering (ethically, do not litter or leave anything that may harm the water or wildlife)
  17. Work with ocean Gods/ Goddesses
  18. Study oceanic folklore and deities
  19. Craft a wand from driftwood
  20. Sea spells utilizing oceanic objects
  21. Have a pet crab
  22. Banishing magic
  23. Work with moon phases
  24. Craft runes out of beach stones
  25. Cast your circles with sand
  26. Ground yourself in the sand
  27. Embrace your inner mermaid with singing
  28. Use and work with ocean plants

  32. Charge tools/ crystals
  33. Decorate your home to feel closer to the ocean
  34. Spend a day at the beach
  35. Visit an aquarium (good substitute if you do not live near the ocean)
  36. Make jewelry out of shells

The ocean is a powerful source and the energy it holds is infinite as well as the witch who harnesses it. Embracing the power of this element can be healing and purifying to one’s body and mind. A means of escaping as well as finding oneself.
